August 2025 Sedan Sales: Wuling Hongguang MINIEV Ranks Second, Xiaomi SU7 Declines, Model 3 Up
Recently, we obtained the latest sales data from the China Passenger Car Association. The data shows that in August, the domestic narrow-sense passenger car market retail sales reached 2.019 million units, a year-on-year increase of 5.9%. Among them, the sedan market sales in August were 904,000 units, a year-on-year increase of 2.3%, showing a strong rise of new energy vehicles and the tenacious defense of traditional fuel vehicles. Let's take a closer look with the Circle Master.
Starwish Takes the Crown, Strong Demand for Pure Electric Models
Specifically, the August sedan sales champion was once again taken by Starwish, with sales reaching 46,000 units. As a highly anticipated new energy model, Starwish has won the favor of many consumers with its excellent range, intelligent configuration, and compact and flexible body, standing out in the new energy sedan market and topping the list for five consecutive months.

The Wuling Hongguang MINIEV followed closely with 37,800 units sold, ranking second. As a perennial favorite in the pure electric car market, it has become the top choice for many office workers for urban commuting due to its affordable price and low operating costs. It indeed holds an unshakable position in the niche market and still has great potential.

In addition, Xiaomi SU7 also made it into the top ten, delivering 19,800 new vehicles in August. As a model with an average price of over 210,000 yuan, this result is indeed impressive. However, the model's sales in August declined by 18.85% month-on-month. With increasing competition from similar models and the depletion of pre-ordered units, Xiaomi is facing increasing pressure.

The long-absent Tesla Model 3 also had a surprise, with 17,700 units sold in August. Its ranking rose dramatically by twenty positions month-on-month, successfully entering the top ten. As Tesla's main model, Model 3 has become one of the few popular American pure electric cars in the Chinese market, thanks to its advantages in range and assisted driving.

Fuel Cars Dominate with Japanese and German Brands
While new energy vehicles are shining, traditional fuel vehicles also have many enduring models that hold a significant market share. The Sylphy is a prime example, ranking third with 27,600 units sold in August. As a classic model that has been deeply rooted in the Chinese market for over a decade, the Sylphy has been favored by family users for its comfortable ride, reliable quality, and good fuel economy.

The Lavida also performed well, with 24,300 units sold in August, ranking fifth. Leveraging the influence of the Volkswagen brand, mature technology, and comprehensive configuration, Lavida has a broad consumer base in the domestic sedan market. For consumers who prefer German cars and have a budget of around 100,000 yuan, it is almost the best choice.

In addition to Lavida, other Volkswagen models also achieved good results in August. The Jetta sold 19,000 units, ranking eighth, the Magotan sold 16,900 units, ranking eleventh, and the Passat sold 18,600 units. They attracted many consumers who value driving quality and brand with their reputation and solid chassis tuning.

BYD Dominates the Plug-in Hybrid Market
It is worth noting that plug-in hybrid models also had a good market performance in August, becoming an important force bridging pure electric and fuel cars. Specifically, the Qin PLUS DM-i sold 26,400 units, ranking fourth; the Qin L DM-i sold 16,700 units, and the Seal 06 DM-i, represented by the Ocean Network, sold 14,600 units, ranking fifteenth.

In the Circle Master's view, plug-in hybrid models combine the cost-saving advantages of pure electric cars and alleviate range anxiety for long-distance travel, achieving a good balance between fuel consumption and power. They meet consumers' dual needs for economy and power, so their sales have always been relatively stable.

From the August sedan sales list, it can be seen that new energy models, whether pure electric or plug-in hybrid, are playing an increasingly important role in the market, gradually moving from the periphery to the mainstream. Traditional fuel cars, with the reputation of classic models, still hold an important share in the market. In the future, with the development of technology and changes in consumer demand, competition in the sedan market will become even more intense.
